What Worktops?

While faults do occur manufacturing processes have been developed to ensure this a very rare event and with worktops being scanned and checked and manually handled on to the delivery trucks they are normally inspected for faults by better companies when being loaded.  Solid wood can be a little more susceptible to movement hence the need for sealing with oil but laminate, acrylic and the marbles and slates are very stable.  Some acrylic instillations have been known to warp slightly as it was not stored flat or moved from a different ambient temperature to the room it was fitted in too quickly. Acrylic needs to be stored flat and in the same room it is being fitted in (or same temperature and humidity) 24 hours before fitting.  Solid wood is treated with oil and this impregnates the wood sealing it from the affects of moisture and as long as you re-oil every year it is fine although damp walls may have an effect – let the plaster dry before you fit it!

One customer did report “black marks” under the coating of oil on her solid wooden worktops. It transpired that wire wool was used to smooth it down after sanding, then oiled without cleaning the threads of wire off properly and you guessed it; the wire went rusty under the coating making visible black marks all over the surface! – Simply sanded back to a new surface and re-oiled with papers and sanders not wire wool!
